The Power of Intention - As seen on freepeople.com
A huge factor in finding balance has to do with our state of mind and awareness. We are living in an age that is abundant in easy-to-find information on almost every topic imaginable but what negative impact can this have on other aspects of our being? It’s creating a world which has a spiritual deficit, which means that there’s not enough of us that feel as connected to the highest and greatest parts of ourselves that we could be amongst the constant distraction.
One of my favourite authors and leaders, Wayne Dyer wrote a book called ‘The Power of Intention’ describing certain principles, where he broaches topics surrounding living on a higher level of awareness/consciousness and how this can be imperative to living a more satisfying and enriched life.
We can do the ‘right’ things we are ‘meant’ to do that help align our bodies, but how can we help our minds achieve balance? How can we help ourselves achieve a state of harmony in the current world we live in, where we are too easily focused on the ‘doing’ instead of the ‘being’? Progress is impossible if we do things the way we have always done things. An open and inquisitive mind allows for growth and setting intentions can be a huge part of that journey.
A great way to help yourself set an intention is to think of a word that you’d like to be reminded of and write it down somewhere for you to see regularly. It could be something you’d like to bring into your life or something you feel speaks to you at that time given your current experiences or maybe even past ones. I naturally chose the word ‘balance’ (written on a chalkboard in my room), which reminds me of the yin and yang in life, that balance and polarity in all things is what helps achieve harmonious experiences and relationships with ourselves and therefore others.
Essentially, being reminded of balance helps me gain more perspective in times when I start to lose it. Seeing the word reminds me to not focus on or obsess too much over anything, and it can help snap me back to reality when I have started to get too caught up in something that is not in fact helping me to achieve my higher purpose, goal and intentions.
To expand on another principle of Wayne Dyers’, he says that ‘wisdom is avoiding thoughts that weaken you’. Having a meaningful word to you (that you see on a regular basis) can help strengthen you. The more we think of the positive things we’d like to create and basically ‘act as if’ we already have what we’d wish to manifest, the more we bring this into our lives. I think of this as the number one step of manifestation! For example, if your word is ‘love’ and you’re seeing this every day written before you, it helps shift your focus to that feeling of love and essentially helps you attract just that!
So, go ahead and start setting yourself some intentions and have fun with it! What is most important to you? What do you dream of achieving one day? What does this world need more of? Pondering questions like these can be great to do with others, perhaps a close friend or partner. When having a conversation with a loved one, set an intention for a conversation and let it flow. Intentionally based conversations can be so healing and connecting.
Another neat trick - want to remember your dreams when you awake after sleep? Set that intention before drifting off and then be amazed at how much you remember when you wake up.
Remember, if we do not ask, we can not receive.
